John McWhorter’s call to “Free the Black Looney Tunes!” reminds me of a short film my college sketch group, The Wicked Wicked Hammerkatz, shot around seven or more years ago. I hadn’t watched it in a long time—until today. I think the comedy still holds up.

Thursday, August 12th, 2010Interview with Greg and Lou in Traverse City, Michigan
Thursday, June 3rd, 2010Back in February of 2010, Greg, AJ, and I performed in Michael Moore’s and Jeff Garlin’s first annual Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival. It was an amazing experience. We performed for over an hour in front of a packed audience and took home an award for our video sketch “Wolverine’s Claw’s Suck.”
So what better way to look back on that great weekend than to watch yourself (myself, in this case) in a 20-or-so minute interview with the awesome Beth Milligan for the UpNorth Media Center.*
In the video you might notice that AJ’s hair has been recently shorn, Greg’s ready to make snowballs (see winter gloves), and I’m looking more mature (this went down a week before my 28th birthday).
There are a few times during the interview when we’re giving our thoughts on comedy that I think we actually sound successful. You know, three successful comedians talking about how all their hard work paid off, and now they’re giving advice to the up-and-comers…
There are also moments where I try to make it clear that we are NOT successful. Let me be clear: We are NOT successful comedians.
But could you imagine how cool it would be if we were?
…I imagine it all the time…
Hey, I’m just thankful that we didn’t come off as complete douchebags in the interview.**

* Sorry. Embedding was not an option. And I recommend you check out the UpNorth Median Center interview with Sean Conroy. Not only is Sean a funny and intelligent comedian, but when he talks about comedy I can’t help but feel a greater respect for the art form I’ve been trying to master (or just be pretty good at) for almost 10 years—if not my whole life.
** …right?

* This hurts. Apparently College Humor got to this joke before we did. I assure you that we had no idea of the existence of their parody prior to our writing, filming, and editing the above video. Had we known about CH’s video I wouldn’t feel compelled to type these words—we wouldn’t have shot it in the first place.
